OLS

Religion
Grade 4 religion is scripture based and correlated to the Catechism of the
Catholic Church. There are various activities and projects associated with the various topics. These topics include: the Bible, Disciples, Saints, Sacraments,
The Ten Commandments, Life of Jesus, and Prayer.

Math
The students will be actively engaged in thinking and writing about their mathematic skills. Grade 4 concepts include: an understanding of arithmetic and numbers, geometry and measurement, function and algebra, statistics and probability, and solving problems using reasoning and problem-solving skills.
 
Reading and English Language Arts (ELA)
In reading, students will learn to:
  • Use context clues to figure out the meanings of words and phrases
  • Make predictions and check throughout the reading of a story to see if
    their predictions are correct
  • Understand fact and opinion
  • Use graphic organizers as a way to gather information and as a means of organizing information and events
  • Summarize what is read
  • Compare and contrast information from two or more written pieces
  • Analyze character traits and motives, setting and plot
  • Distinguish between fiction/non-fiction
  • Analyze details
In writing, students will learn to:
  • Use correct grammar, sentence structure, and effective vocabulary
  • Organize details related to one topic
  • Use the writing process
  • Write several related paragraphs on one topic
  • Edit writing
  • Develop a voice, ideas and logical order in their written work
  • Write a variety of pieces, i.e. narrative, informative, persuasive and creative
  • Use knowledge and vocabulary to produce interesting writing
Science
The Grade 4 text is Science Discovery Works. We will use the textbook, investigation, demonstration and experimentation to learn about science.

 
Life Science
  • Identify and describe different environments and life forms supported by each
  • Identify and describe characteristics and behaviors that are instinctive or learned
  • Compare and classify organisms based on characteristics
  • Describe how animals interact with the living and nonliving environment
  • Keeping Fit and Healthy
Earth Science
  • Observe, record, and predict daily weather patterns using meteorological tools
  • Identify various cloud formations and describe how clouds are formed
  • Research and describe severe weather phenomena
  • Observe the process of weathering and erosion
  • Explore environmental issues
Physical Science
  • Demonstrate and distinguish between static and current electricity
  • Demonstrate and distinguish among different types of circuits
  • Predict and test various materials to identify conductors and insulators of electricity
  • Investigate and describe the properties of matter
Social Studies
Grade 4 social studies introduces the students to the history and geography of New York State. They also learn about the people and events that have influenced our state. They study the geography of NYS and the natural environments, the movement of people and goods across the state, and the distinguishing features of various regions within the state. A variety of projects will be completed during the different topics. The students will use maps, globes, diagrams, and satellite images. They will also work on research, report writing, and note taking skills as the year progresses.
