Elementary
At the elementary level, the physical education curriculum addresses basic manipulative skills (ball handling, parachute, jump rope, Frisbee, hula hoop) and rhythm and movement skills. These skills are practiced through warm-up exercises involving walking, running, hopping, skipping, jumping, leaping, dodging, and one and two handed catching. These skills are also practiced in low organization games such as Simon Says, Cat and Rat, What Time Is It Mr. Fox?, Follow the Leader, Mother, May I?, tag and balloon play. Students are also introduced to skills later utilized in soccer, basketball, volleyball, and football.
Middle School
At the middle school level, the students apply the coordination skills already developed, and learn new skills and rules required to play soccer, basketball, lacrosse, volleyball, softball, and flag football. They are also introduced to different forms of dance and health related activities, such as yoga, gymnastics and fitness workouts. |
